Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, says he has already activated processes aimed at securing the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), who was recently convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment.
Kanu was sentenced on November 20 by Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court, Abuja. His legal team has since indicated plans to challenge the judgement.
In a statement issued on Saturday, Otti revealed that he began working behind the scenes to secure Kanu’s freedom even while the trial was still ongoing. The governor said that discussions and strategies were already in motion, and he would continue to pursue them to their conclusion.
“While Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is free to appeal his conviction, I’m happy to inform you that I have activated and will continue to work on the already agreed strategy until his freedom is secured,” Otti stated.
The governor added that his efforts are backed by engagements with key figures in the nation’s leadership. He noted that he had communicated certain agreements reached with what he described as “the highest authorities” during his visit to Kanu at the Department of State Services (DSS) facility in Abuja.
Otti reaffirmed that his administration remains committed to peace, stability, and justice in Abia State and the wider Southeast, emphasizing that Kanu’s case is a matter of deep concern to the people he governs.
