The Lagos State Police Command has dismissed widespread reports suggesting that it has launched an investigation into alleged sexual harassment involving Pastor Chris Okafor.
Reacting to the reports, the command’s spokesperson, Superintendent of Police Adebisi Abimbola, described the claims as false and misleading, stressing that the Commissioner of Police, Olohundare Jimoh, never ordered any such investigation.
According to Abimbola, the issue was misconstrued after a journalist forwarded screenshots and social media posts to the police, alleging that there were murder-related claims linked to the pastor. She clarified that the Commissioner of Police was only made aware of the online allegations and did not initiate any formal probe.
She explained that the materials were forwarded strictly for situational awareness, after which the CP merely instructed the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) to verify whether the murder allegations circulating online had any basis.
Abimbola emphasized that this directive should not be mistaken for the commencement of a full-scale investigation.
She further clarified that no invitation has been extended to Pastor Okafor or to any other individual in connection with the matter. According to her, the police social media team is still reviewing the claims as part of routine monitoring of online content.
The police spokesperson said she was taken aback when media reports later emerged claiming that Pastor Okafor was being investigated for sexual harassment, noting that such an allegation was never discussed within the command.
Abimbola appealed to the public and media organizations to exercise restraint and verify information before publication, reiterating that the Commissioner of Police only authorized a fact-check on the alleged murder-related posts and did not order any investigation into sexual harassment.
She urged journalists and social media users to avoid spreading unverified information capable of misleading the public or damaging reputations.
