Orji Uzor Kalu: I’ve Been Working Tirelessly to Secure Nnamdi Kanu’s Release

Senator Orji Uzor Kalu says he has been consistently engaging the Federal Government to secure a political resolution in the ongoing legal battle involving the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.

Kalu made the remarks during an interview on Sunday Politics, a Channels Television programme monitored by Pulse. His comments follow the recent conviction of Kanu by the Federal High Court in Abuja on terrorism-related charges.

The Abia North senator insisted that the matter has gone beyond a conventional legal contest and now requires a political intervention.

“The problem of Nnamdi Kanu is what we need to solve via a political process. I have been working with the Federal Government of Nigeria on how to solve this issue, and nobody should question the decision of Justice Omotosho,” he added.

Kalu noted that while Kanu’s legal team is expected to challenge the ruling at the Appeal Court, he plans to reach out to the Attorney General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, to advise the President on possible steps forward.

The former Abia State governor expressed deep concern over the negative impact the prolonged crisis has had on the South-East. He lamented that many residents and businesses have suffered due to insecurity and disruptions linked to IPOB activities.

He stressed that the human cost of the issue is often overlooked.

“I know the pressure I personally put on President Buhari before he was released in April 2017. Nobody is talking about the Igbo who were killed,” he added.

Kalu further acknowledged the behind-the-scenes roles played in Kanu’s previous release, crediting Mamman Daura and former Attorney General Abubakar Malami for their involvement in securing Kanu’s bail in 2017.

As calls grow for a political solution, Kalu maintains that resolving the situation requires leadership, dialogue, and a clear understanding of the impact the continued crisis has on the South-East region.
